It appears the Mark Rein, CEO of Epic Games, finally had time to collect his thoughts after the “hilarious” question of whether or not the Wii-U would be capable of running the Unreal Engine 4.
He came forward in an interview with Engadget to confirm that the Unreal Engine 4 is very versatile and can run on the Wii-U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and EVEN mobiles. The biggest barrier in the way is the support of developers. Rein says that the graphics would not look as good and hence would not have the same flare that the fans would have come to expect.
The other problem is of course the developers who are probably very adamant on using such a high caliber Engine on the aged hardware of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 without properly knowing if the risk would be worth the reward.
You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U, he said. If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen. While that game might not look as pretty as it would on a “true” next-gen console, the new engine is scalable to a variety of platforms, including mobile.
As you can see, the Engine can indeed run on current gen hardware but of course would not be as beautiful and hence can lead to a let down from the fans who would probably go in expecting so much more from the amazing new Engine.
I for one would prefer to wait and see the utilization of the engine in a next gen game rather than see it in its ugliest on the current generation hardware. I mean come on, we should learn from the Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3 (on the consoles) that the end of the current generation is nigh and its time to make room for the future!
