One of the most innovative things about Ubisoft’s ZombiU is its permanent death mechanic. According to Ubisoft Montpellier story design director Gabrielle Shrager, it almost didn’t make it into the game.
Speaking at a panel today at the Game Developer’s Conference Shrager mentioned how the genesis of the game had it coming and going multiple times. “After rebooting the game’s setting we nearly killed the permadeath a couple of times.” ZombiU writer Antony Johnston added to that statement a bit later in during the panel when talking about the lack of “real survival horror games on the market today.
“We thought these elements throuigh, we assessed their impact and we focused on what was unique; especially in the current market where real survival horror has become such a rarity.” Johnston has always been a proponent of “true” survival horror and has bemoaned the death of such games since he wrote the first Dead Space game.
ZombiU is still out exclusively for the WiiU if you haven’t had a chance to try it out and experience what survival horror is really about.
