Come this holiday season, we’ll see yet another contender to the console market. This time, it’s the Valve backed, Xi3 Piston, which will be an unofficial, third party version of the Steam Box.
The Piston is armed to the teeth, featuring a 128GB SSD as its primary storage device. Its hard drive is loaded up with 3.2GHz Quad Core (R464) processor, 8GB RAM and another 128GB SSD. If you’re willing to shelve out the money, though, you can pump that internal SSD up to 256GB, or 512GB. Designed from the ground up to work with Steam Big Picture, the powerful Piston should serve as an early alternative to Valve’s Steam Box.
“Clearly, the computer/video gaming market is huge, both in the personal computer and traditional console markets,” said Jason A. Sullivan president and CEO of Xi3 Corporation
“That being said, we believe there is a crying need for a machine that captures the best of both worlds, with the upgradeability of computer gaming rigs and the design and form factor of consoles. We believe our Piston Consoles do exactly that – deliver the beauty and small size of consoles with the upgradeability of computers.”
