Launch titles are some of the most important games you can see on a console. Often it’s this initial line-up that decides the popularity of that particular console over the next year, so Sony is looking for as strong a start as they can get.
Not ones to toot their own horn or anything, but Sony were getting a bit boastful when talking to CVG about their launch line-up for the PlayStation 4.
With PlayStation 4 what’s exciting is we can see the strength in depth of titles come through — not just in first party but third party, and I really believe PlayStation 4 will have the strongest launch line-up we’ve ever had. I think there are big genres that we want to cover but we want to innovate within them and move them on.
This was the first announcement, it was an early announcement, and as I said this was really to set the agenda and to get it clear to everybody what those design pillars were for PlayStation 4, what the ethos is behind PS4, who it’s aimed at and getting the game development community on board.
If this line-up for the PS4 is as strong as Sony seem to reckon it will be then it could mean good things for the early life of the console. Of course, they still need to follow this up with strong releases throughout the entire life of the console, lest they alienate their early buyers.
