Potentially interesting news happened on Friday, when Sony registered domain URLs for “PlayStation Cloud.” Some of the domains that were snagged by Sony include, playstation-cloud.com and playstation-org.
Somewhat obvious upon retrospect, is the fact that these domains were registered by Gaikai, a gaming company that allows gamers to play games via cloud-based Internet streaming. Gaikai was recently purchased by Sony not but a year ago.
This news only adds to the speculation that the next PlayStation will be able to stream games. If the Wall Street Journal is to be believed, then this is indeed true, based on their report:
“The new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs.”
Hopefully, this will all be confirmed when Sony reveals more during tomorrow’s PlayStation event in New York City.
