According to some speculation by The Times, the new PlayStation 4 will be priced at around £300. This is understandable considering that the high price of the PlayStation 3 is what drove customers away.
The PlayStation 3 was originally priced at over £400 while Nintendo’s Wii, which was the best-selling console of its generation, was almost half of that. Another thing to note is that Sony was selling its consoles at a loss hoping to make a long term profit which meant that production costs were even higher. The fact that the console was launched after the Xbox 360 also hurt sales.
However, Sony seems to have learned its lesson and will be launching the PlayStation 4 at the same time as Xbox 720 launches. The new console will have a processor and graphics unit powerful enough to play games on Ultra HD or 4K televisions so it seems that Sony will be facing a big production cost, let’s just hope they do price it cheap enough for a wider appeal than last time.
