In the massively popular Diablo 3, Hardcore mode allows you to create characters that only live once, and are deleted completely when you die.
Basically this means permanent death, and for a guy who’s managed to get his toon to the level cap and gotten some pretty legendary gear with him, the concept is pretty terrifying.
Still it’s a fun mode to play since the stakes are higher, but some sneaky players have found ways to cheat the system by requesting account rollbacks from Diablo 3 support. This has the unintended side effect of reviving the characters associated with the account, including hardcore toons.
As of the 1.0.7 patch due tomorrow, this will no longer be possible. When Diablo 3 Hardcore characters die, they stay dead, system admins can no longer revive these characters and the reasons stated by Blizzard are as follows:
Hardcore characters were never intended to be revived or undeleted by an account rollback. Bringing Hardcore characters back to life via rollback really isn’t in the spirit of Hardcore […] [we also]discovered that some players who’ve lost Hardcore characters through normal gameplay will fake an account compromise and request a rollback through Customer Support in order to get their characters revived.
