The Cave Crashes, Errors, Freezes, Performance and Graphics Fixes

By   /   Jan 26, 2013

I must say, Double Fine has done a pretty good job with The Cave. The game is being admired a lot, and if you have an adventurous personality, there are great chances that you are going to love the game. The game on PC, however, is not free of the small issues (errors, crashes and bugs, etc.).

Good news is that the developer is working hard to resolve the issues faced by users. In fact, an update has already been rolled out to address the major issues. If you are unlucky enough and still can’t manage to run the game, then following list of issues and the concerned possible solutions can help you in fixing the problem.

#1 The Cave Performance Issues/Bad FPS
If you are having trouble in getting the smooth experience due to low fps, i will recommend that you go through the following points:

  • Try to turn Vsync option off in the settings as it can cap your FPS at 30 even if you have a PC good enough to run the game on max.
  • The game resolution should be same as your desktop resolution.
  • You can also try to change the game directory to other partition on your hard drive. It may sound irrelevant, but it might be worth of a shot.

#2 The Cave – Missing Executable (.exe) File
You need to verify the integrity of your game files (>properties>local files>verify integrity of game cache).

#3 The Cave Black Screen Problem
You should try running the game in the windowed mode. Go to the games properties in steam, select set launch options and type “-window” without brackets and then run the game. And if you are using a screen connected to the console or PC via HDMI, you should do the following steps:

  • Go to %APPDATA%\Doublefine\TheCave\
  • Create an empty text file called screen.dat if it does not exist.
  • Open screen.dat in the text editor of you choice.

The format of the file should look like the following, but change the details to meet the capabilities of your display.

fullscreen = true
width = 1920
height = 1080
refreshrate = 60
vsync = false

This should make the black screen go away.

#4 The Cave Crashes on Startup
If you have verified the game cache already, I will recommend that you uninstall the game completely and perform a fresh install. This may fix your problem. You can also try out the following:

  • Exit Steam and re-run it as administrator.
  • Furthermore, if you are a Nvidia user, make sure that multi-display in NVIDIA control panel is turned off.

#5 The Cave – How to fix recurring DirectX Installation
The problem occurs because application fails at writing a VC2010 registry value. Here is a method to fix it:

Step #1
Create a file named 1.reg (beware not 1.reg.txt)

Step #2
Write inside:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Valve\Steam\Apps\221810]
“DirectX”=dword:00000001
“VC2008″=dword:00000001
“VC2010″=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\Apps\221810]
“DirectX”=dword:00000001
“VC2008″=dword:00000001
“VC2010″=dword:00000001

Step #3
Save and double click the file as administrator, this will import the key whether you are running 32 or 64bit Windows.

#6 The Cave – How to resolve the Flickering Issue
The issue can be due to some GFX incompatibility related to Depth of Field. So, if you want a smoother experience, it’s recommended that you disable the DOF option in the settings menu.

#7 The Cave Graphics Issues (Bad Visuals)
There is a chance that while playing the game, you may feel some strange transparent artifacts, or you might be able to see through solid objects like rocks, etc. The problem is associated with MSAA settings. You should set the option to ““use application defaults” to solve the issue.
