Atari US has filed chapter 11 bankruptcy in an attempt to distance itself from its parent company Atari SA, formerly Infogrames.
Atari SA is going through difficult times and was a burden on the more successful Atari US which “has recently launched a slew of chart-topping titles for iOS and Android mobile platforms, including Atari Greatest Hits, Outlaw, Breakout and Asteroids Gunner”. The company also released Witcher 2 which is one of its last prominent titles.
Last year they tried to get out of financial burden by cutting ties with Eden Games. This latest move will allow them to sell the logo and titles such as Pong, Centipede, Asteroids and Tempest and instead focus on bringing in more profit.
Although popular for their classic titles the company was struggling to keep up in recent years. Now they will be concentrating on freely releasing more successful digital and mobile titles which in the past made the bulk of Atari S.A’s profits.
