NPD Stats Rank Black Ops 2 as Most Selling Game of 2012

The NPD group has been keeping track of video gaming trends and has released the stats for the year 2012. To no one’s surprise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 tops the retail charts for both December and 2012 overall, the fourth consecutive year a Call of Duty game has done so.

Another repeat of previous years is the success of the Xbox 360 which, according to Microsoft, outsold its closest rival console by double the amount and this is the 2nd consecutive year the console has done so. Microsoft cited the NPD Group as the source of the statistics. December was a crucial month as always, marking an increase in sales owing to the holidays. The statistics for December showed the Xbox 360 sold 1.4 million units and had $1.27 billion spent on retail of software, hardware and accessories.

This year saw a 22% decrease in 2011’s sales, earning $13.26 compared to the $17 billion of the previous year with decreases in both hardware and software. December also, coincidentally, showed a 22% decrease in sales. However, a thing to note is that these statistics are purely based on physical sales and does not include digital sales, sales from used games, DLCs and point cards, whereas this year was an important one for digital content sales as confirmed by Liam Callahan from NPD,

“2012 was also the best year for point card and subscription card sales as gamers sought digital content on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Nintendo’s eShop. Games like Journey and Minecraft broke records for number of games downloaded.”

Furthermore, the decrease in sales can be attributed to the fact that the year also saw a 29% decrease in game title releases, a sign of the console generation growing old. Although there were fewer titles, the titles released brought in 8% more sales and 11% more dollars spent, especially the few big hit franchise releases as Callahan adds,

“In December 2012, positive trending for many annualized franchises like Call of Duty, Skylanders, Assassin’s Creed, and FIFA, points to consumers’ increased spending on hits, but that middle-tier games as well as catalog titles are suffering”
