EA Founder Trip Hawkins Opens Up New Studio

EA Founder Trip Hawkins is teaming up with former Mosi Monsters Lead Designer, Ben Geliher, to open up a new London based game studio. The name of the studio is “If You Can.” The studio’s primary aim is to make educational games first of which will be released later this year.

Hawkins had this to say on the opening of his new studio in London:

Great game development can take place anywhere in the world if you have the right people. If anything I’m disinclined to ramp up on the San Francisco area because it’s so expensive and there’s very high turnover with people switching companies. The culture and the lifestyle there is a little bit daunting.

In the past there were countries like Ireland or Canada that were particularly attractive to game development because of government practices and tax credits and so on, but the European Union has done more to standardize that and benefits are becoming available in the UK.

Recruitment for the studio has already begun. Furthermore, Hawkins also pointed out the talent in London as one of the major reasons for his decision to make London his new studio’s home.

The UK has always been one of the three countries that have done the most in the way of creativity in game design. There are a lot of other countries that have tried and haven’t even come close. There’s a great legacy and talent in England.

Let’s see what the great man has to offer with his new studio. Who’s excited?
