2012 saw some heavy investment on kickstarter from gamers with a passion not seen before. To celebrate the new year kickstarter had a look back on the achievements of the previous,
“In 2012, 2,241,475 people pledged a total of $319,786,629 and successfully funded 18,109 projects”.
The games category had the most money pledged and was the most lucrative second to art. It also attracted more backers than any other category by a large margin. However, where there were a few successful kickstarters, there were a lot of failures too. Double Fine and Project Eternity were one of the most successful projects and broke previous records. Other than games, kickstarter was also responsible for making the Ouya console a reality and also funding VR headset Oculus Rift.
Overall, despite the failures that never make news, kickstarter had a wonderful year and continues to grow.
