Talking to Kotaku, producer and director of the reborn Final Fantasy XIV, Naoki Yoshida, admitted that another mistake like the original version of the MMO will have disastrous results for the company.
After outrage from both general audience and critics, Yoshida realizes that another mistake can destroy the biggest franchise Square Enix has to offer and permanently ruin their reputation. Yoshida assured that “We won’t make another mistake like Final Fantasy XIV again”, adding that “if we did, it would be like at the level of destroying the company.”
Yoshida explained his hesitance before joining the team and traces back to where they went wrong:
“When I heard that it was it was going to go on sale as planned I thought, ‘that will probably be a big mistake. I think it would have been good if they tried seeing what happened if they turned World of Warcraft into Final Fantasy. Because they tried only to make something that was ‘different from Final Fantasy XI’, they ended up with not much of anything. They should have said, ‘Hey you, go play WoW for a year.’ Unless you are a genius, you cannot make something new from nothing.”
The company has been getting some bad reputation recently and Yoshida’s statement might be right on the money.
