Square Enix has struck a licensing agreement with Epic Games, which allows them rights to develop games using the Unreal Engine 3 and 4. The terms also state that Square Enix will be provided with support from Epic Games Japan.

Taka Kawasaki, territory manager of Epic Games Japan said on the license agreement:

Epic has a strong relationship with Square Enix, and it’s an honour to provide their creative and technical talent with the best game technology available for licensing. We look forward to supporting their developers with world-class tools for years to come.

The next-generation Unreal Engine 4 was revealed earlier this year and features real-time global illumination. Demos showcased so far for the new technology marks it as amazing.

Square Enix though will not be depending on the Unreal Technology alone. They are also developing their own next-generation engine called the Luminous Engine.

The firm has yet to announce any projects that would be based on Unreal Engine 4.
