The Kevin Butler saga has taken a new turn. It seems now the actor known to play the character of “Kevin Butler” in many of Sony’s advertisements, Jerry Lambert, is being sued by Sony for appearing in an advert promoting Sony’s rival company Nintendo.
Sony has justified their actions by stating:
We invested significant resources in bringing the Kevin Butler character to life, and he’s become an iconic personality directly associated with PlayStation products over the years. Use of the Kevin Butler character to sell products other than those from PlayStation misappropriates Sony’s intellectual property, creates confusion in the market and causes damage to Sony.
Lambert has appeared in a number of online and TV ads for the PlayStation brand, including the It Only Does Everything and Long Live Play campaigns. Furthermore, he has also appeared on stage of E3 as Sony’s ambassador.
Personally, I feel that if Mr. Lambert was not under contract with Sony, he should not be given any trouble by them for appearing in other advertisements. A man has to earn his livelihood after all.
Sony does have a valid point of Kevin Butler face being synonymous with its products but what do they want Mr. Lambert to do change his face just to work in his own profession.
