CVG reports that the new console from Nintendo, the Wii U will be region locked.
What does this mean for gamers? It provides restrictions, that’s what. Games purchased by you from either US, Europe or Japan will only work on the Wii U built for those regions.
Region-locking has been integrated by Nintendo on a number of their previous consoles: NES, SNES, GameCube, 3DS and Wii.
On the other hand, Nintendo’s competitors, Sony and Microsoft have given the freedom of region-locking to the publishers. In most cases their games are region-free, giving you the chance of playing anywhere in the world.
Sony’s latest hand-held, the PlayStation Vita is also region free.
