By its very premise, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is a very ballsy game. Clearly, a homage, if not borderline plagiarism, to Nintendo’s Super Smash Brothers series, it has a lot to live up to, if it wants to avoid being the laughing stock of the console wars.
With the release of two new characters and their trailers, I’m starting to really wonder about this games future.
This first trailer features Nariko, from the Heavenly Sword… game. With this trailer, I’ve begun to notice a pattern.
A massive percentage of the characters in Battle Royale, wield swords and are from the hack and slack, action-adventure genre. So, as one can imagine, they will probably play very similar to one another and cater towards the same play style.
Which doesn’t seem like it would be a good thing. What makes it even worse, is that I really want all of these characters in Battle Royale. So I don’t even have any suggestions on how to make these iconic Sony characters, all fit in this game.
The second trailer, on the other hand, showcased Sir Daniel Fortesque. What I noticed with this character, is that the tone of this game is all over the place. With Nintendo, the artstyle and character tone is fairly consistent across several decades of gaming.
When you think Mario, Link, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu, you have this similar, cartoon-ish color palette, tone and feel. Whereas having Parappa, Sly Cooper and Toro in the same game as Kratos, BigDaddy and Sweet Tooth, the clash of tone and artstyle just don’t match.
Hopefully, we’ll all be pleasantly surprised, come this November when this game is released, and we actually get a chance to hold it in our hands.
