Black Ops 2: Tons Of Multiplayer Details Revealed

By   /   Aug 14, 2012

Taking opportunity of their presence at Gamescom in Germany, Treyarch has revealed more details about the multiplayer mode for Black Ops 2.

Score Streaks & Level Progression
The developer confirmed that kill streaks have been replaced by score streaks in the multiplayer. This step was taken in an effort to focus on e-sports and provide a more competitive environment for players to battle in.

In contrast to the conventional kill streak system, killing enemy players now and performing scoring events will grant you points that fill up a Score Streak Meter. You will gain access to a score streak once the meter has filled up. Currently, there are 22 score streaks in the game.

The game will feature 55 levels of progression and 10 levels of prestige. As with previous titles, players completing certain objectives will be rewarded with medals that give extra experience.

Vonderhaar from Treyarch mentioned that they decided to separate XP and scoring events to make leveling up a bit more interesting:

When we were looking at this system very critically, when we were looking at ranking and progression and what we wanted to do with this thing, we realised there are some things you do as a player that are just completely awesome, but that shouldn’t necessarily count towards earning your next score streak. So intentionally and carefully, we’ve separated XP and scoring events. Sometimes scoring and medal events are the same thing. Sometimes you’ll see a scoring event with no medal whatsoever, and sometimes you’ll see a medal with no scoring event.

When you level up in Black Ops 2 you are awarded with a token. These tokens can be used to unlock all items in the game including weapons, perks, equipment, wild cards and score streaks. Every items will have a designated level so you can only unlock them when you reach that rank.

Pick 10 – New Create A Class System
Black Ops 2 will also feature a new Create a Class system. Treyarch calls their new system Pick 10.

The new system lets players choose any 10 pieces of content from the game and assign them to a pre-determined slot. This includes all weapons, attachments, perks, equipments, grenades etc.

Hence, if you are not interested in using grenades then you don’t have to pick them. You can then use that extra point on any other content.

Every item costs one of these 10 allocation points, which fill a bar displayed at the top of the customise a class screen. In addition, wild cards, which each use one of the 10 allocation points, let you bend the rules. They can let you take two perks from the same category, or add a third attachment to your gun, for example.

New Items & Score Streak Highlights
Speaking on Vonderhaar highlighted some of the new items. These were seen in the previous multiplayer video.

  • The Assault Shield (Equipment) can be planted in the ground to use as cover.
  • The Millimetre Scanner (Weapon Attachment) detects targets by sending a pulse from your gun.
  • Shock Charge (Grenade) stuns your target with a chain of lightening.

Some of the new score streaks were highlighted as well.

  • The Guardian, a turret that sends out player-stunning waves.
  • The A.G.R., a tank that starts killing as soon as it’s deployed. Players can also take control of the A.G.R if they wish to do so.
  • The Hellstorm, a piloted missile that can burst into smaller missiles for a higher coverage area.
  • The Escort Drone, a flying AI death dealer that reports in to the player with voice communications.

E-Sports Features
Vonderhaar reminded everyone how Treyarch plans to embrace e-sports with their new title. He talked about a couple of new features in this aspect.

We think there is a tremendous opportunity here to bring e-sports to the masses, and we think Call of Duty is the game to do it.

Black Ops 2 will feature League Play, a match making system that takes into consideration your skill level. That basically means good news to newcomers who will be able to play against other new players as well.

Accompanying this will be two new features Codcasting and Live Streaming.

Codcasting will allow shoutcasters to host a show for a match. They will be given with all necessary information in order to shoutcast, including names of players, score tabs and much more.

Live Streaming will allow players to stream their games from within the game itself. These streams will be watchable on multiple devices such as an iPad.

New Game Modes
Two brand new modes were shown as well. The first is called multi-team and it allows up to six teams to battle against each other on the same map.

The second new game mode is Hardpoint which basically is a location on the map that changes as the battle progresses. You might remember the ‘Headquarters’ Mode in Call of Duty 4. This is the same thing.

Other modes were confirmed as well: Team Death Match, Domination and Search and Destroy.

Multiplayer Maps
A total of four maps were unveiled.

  • Aftermath, takes place in 2025 and showcases destruction after a drone attack.
  • Cargo, moving crates will grant cover only for a short while.
  • Turbine, one of the largest maps with many climbable areas.
  • Yemen, a close quarter urban street fight in dusty city streets.
