It was soon recalled, the PS3 version got delayed and Square Enix even apologized to dismayed Final Fantasy fans for the critical flop.
With a new development team set up, Final Fantasy XIV was renamed to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
Naoki Yoshida, the director commented over the naming:
A Realm Reborn is a symbol of a completely new Final Fantasy XIV, but also marks the beginning of a new stage as the latest title in the Final Fantasy series.
That said, a fully reforged Final Fantasy MMO title is going to be released soon and Square Enix wants the players to come back. They have released a new cinematic trailer for just that and they hope that players are willing to give them a second chance.
Square Enix has remarked that A Realm Reborn was practically built from scratch and features a new storyline to explore.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is planned for both Windows PC and PlayStation 3. The PC version is expected to go live by the end of this year, while the PS3 version will follow soon after.
