David Cage on Beyond: Two Souls: I Want to Create an Emotional Journey, Not Focusing on “Fun”

David Cage has been known to create engrossing, intellectual games. While Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit wasn’t really known for their gameplay as much as for their narrative, this trend seems to be continuing for Quantic Dream’s next game Beyond: Two Souls.

In an interview with EDGE, Cage states that he values giving the players “meaning” and not just concentrating on the “fun.”

My goal is to surprise people, to give them something they want without knowing they want it…I want to create an emotional journey, a unique experience.

I am not interested in giving them ‘fun’, I want to give them meaning; I don’t want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds.

While this could be considered a bad thing, do keep in mind that we’ already have a ton of games that challenge our thumbs. Just take your typical FPS, it might be a lot of fun to play but when was the last time it made you think and emotionally involved?

Beyond: Two Souls is set for release next year on the PS3.
