While Resident Evil has slowly been shedding its “survival horror” skin for quite some time now, this hasn’t been more pronounced as it is now when Resident Evil 5 offered full co-op on the game’s main campaign.
Now it seems Resident Evil 6 is aiming to do it one better — or make that four better, as the game will employ four-player co-op. If that news isn’t new to you, then maybe why they’ve added this is.
In an interview with Game Informer, Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi tells us why this is now part of the game.
Just to make clear: We weren’t setting out to create this 4-player co-op experience. That wasn’t the goal from the beginning, but we had all these stories that we want to tell and we wanted a way for them to intersect and give you a different perspective on the stories that are happening for the other characters. And then we thought, “Well, just having the stories themselves, just the stories, is kind of boring.”
We wanted a more interesting way of getting that to the player. So we thought, “Well, if that was actually playable, it just didn’t happen in the cutscenes, but that it was playable. Then the two groups of players playing together, that would be interesting.”
It could be interesting indeed! We’ll know how interesting it is once Resident Evil 6 ships on October 2 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
