Capcom Wants to Speed Up Game Development of Top Franchises

Capcom aims to reduce development cycles of its key franchises from 3-4 years down to 2.5 years between sequels. The publisher is aiming to start this new program with the Lost Planet and DmC series.

This sentiment was shared by Capcom chairman and CEO Kenzo Tsuijimoto who told investors:

We want to reduce the time needed to develop major titles from the usual three-to-four years to only 2.5 years…Speeding up development will probably raise the cost. But creating quality content will be vital to Capcom’s ability to survive by overcoming intense global competition.

For reference, Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsuijimoto noted that the upcoming Lost Planet 3 is on track to hit it’s 2.5 year development cycle goal, while Resident Evil 6 is arriving 3.5 years after its predecessor (not counting spin-offs).

While not waiting for future installments of a franchise is a good thing, let’s hope that quality isn’t sacrificed at the expense of semi-annual releases.
