  16. Freezing Field (maxed)

This build is used when you need to harass heavily in a lane. Abusing Crystal Nova’s amazing cast range, and AoE, you can easily harass while maintaining a safe distance.

Maxing Crystal Nova first, enables your team to initiate from crazy distances with great ease, making it amazing in ganks, chasing, and harassing and disabling.

Freezing Field is delayed in favor of putting more points into Brilliance Aura, to support your Crystal Nova usage. Freezing Field simply costs too much, and is too risky to use that early in the game.

This build is used when you have a mana hungry, aggressive hero in every lane. By maxing Brilliance Aura, you enable your team to be more liberal with their mana usage.

Which usually translates to your team winning every single lane. This build is usually reserved for when you’re playing with people that you know can take advantage of your global aura.

Crystal Maiden Strategy Tips

As a hard-support, Crystal Maiden is a relatively item independent hero that spends her gold on the courier, wards, and counter-warding with Sentry Wards.

Any additional gold you may obtain, goes to beefing up your survivability; Be it by Bracers, Magic Stick, or Force Staff. At the start of the game, you’ll want to take one of your wards, and put it on the highest ground closest to the rune that’s nearest your lane.

This allows you to detect incoming ganks while also giving your team knowledge of where the rune spawns. Which is crucial to mid winning their lane and giving them more opportunities to gank the side lane.

Although indirectly, placing wards actually benefits you by giving you more gold and exp, for when mid ganks your lane, and by saving you gold, when you’re able to detect and avoid incoming ganks on you.

If you’re unfamiliar with locations to places your wards, there are many markings on the terrain that have what look like an eye, outlined in white, placed on the most optimal ward locations. Use this as a guide of knowing where to place your wards, and where to place your Sentry Wards, for counter-warding.

Since Crystal Maiden is so item independent, she has no need to compete for last hits with her lane partner. This works out for the best, as hard supports are usually paired with a hard-carry, and other item dependent heroes. To let them farm, you should apply pressure to the enemy heroes.

Crystal Maiden excels at this, because of Crystal Nova’s absurd range, AoE, and effects. If you’re in the short lane, then it’s important that you stack the creep camp, closest to your lane. To do so, wait till the :53 second mark, attack the creep, and run away from the camp.

Once the camp has been stacked, return to it, and pull it at the :14 second mark into your creep wave. While your creeps are beating on the neutral creeps, don’t mindlessly auto attack.

Let the neutrals naturally deny the creeps for you, so that your opponents you’re laning against, get drastically reduced experience. Though, be sure to grab last hits on the neutrals.

Post-Laning Phase
During the mid game, you should be constantly with your team. Even when you need to go ward, or counter-ward, you should have allies with you. When a fight breaks loose, be sure to keep in mind that you’re the expendable one.

If you have to initiate a fight and die in the process, so that your team can clean up on multiple opponents, then you’ve set your team ahead, without losing much in the process. This mind set transitions into the team fighting phase without much modification.

Usually, you’ll have your teams designated initiator, to initiate for you. However, there are many cases where your team will be poorly assembled, and you may not have one.

In such a case, you’ll have to take one for the team. Luckily, Crystal Nova’s massive cast range and AoE, will allow you to initiate from a slightly safer distance, than most heroes.

Closing Comments – There isn’t much to say about Crystal Maiden. She’s been tested and used for years, and works perfectly in the role assigned for her. Just be sure to always have wards up, especially around the river that leads to the entrance of  Roshan.
