It’s now time for more next-gen rumors! This time, it’s once again the Xbox 720’s turn. According to IGN’s sources, assembly of the next Xbox are currently underway at the Austin Texas branch of Flextronics…this is the same company assembling Xbox 360s now and is also the same manufacturer of the original Xbox.
While this sounds too good to be true, the same report states that what Flextronics is doing now is most likely NOT retail units to be sold commercially, bur rather, they’re development kit consoles that are created specifically for game developers. Of course, this makes sense as game consoles will need actual games to get the public’s attention, no?
Microsoft has issued the following statement regarding this rumor.
Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.
We can speculate all we want, but we won’t know any exact details unless Microsoft themselves confirm it. In any case, with this much smoke, I suspect we’re but a few months/years away from the next Xbox.
