Sony has just announced that Skype is now officially available for the PlayStation Vita. It can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store for free and is compatible with both WiFi and 3G PS Vita models.
Curious as to how it will work while playing games? In a rather logical move by Sony, Skype will run in the background while users play games or use other apps for the Vita…although certain titles will shut off the network connectivity — which, in turn, will limit the player from getting inbound calls. PlayStation Vita users can also use both the handheld’s rear and front camera for Skype calls.
Of course, something can’t officially be announced without an official press statement. Why not let Senior Director, Consumer Electronics Group at Skype Manrique Brenes welcome it formally.
Our users appreciate being able to access Skype features wherever and whenever they choose…With the launch of Skype for PS Vita, we are taking another step towards our ultimate goal of making Skype video calling available on every platform, all over the world, and meeting the demands of existing PlayStation users to offer video on a gaming console.
Hopefully, this is but just a start in adding useful apps to the Vita.
