CliffyB: We Wanted to Make Gears of War More “Band of Brothers” than a Dude Bro Game

CliffyB wants to make Gears of War's more than just a "dude bro" game.

It’s hard to argue that Epic’s Gears of War franchise is the one of the ultimate “dude bro” games, and Cliff Bleszinski knows it.

If you’re wondering what “dude bro” games are, well, they’re essentially games that are played by frat boys who high-five each other and yell “dude” or “bro” all the time – basically, games that ooze machismo and testosterone.

Believe it or not, Bleszinski (more commonly known as CliffyB) originally didn’t want the franchise to go this route. In a video interview with IGN, CliffyB states that he didn’t always make “dude bro” games for Epic and even added, “The intent was to make [Gears of War] a lot more Band of Brothers and take it a lot more serious.”

Why the the departure then? Well, CliffyB admits that the people at Epic Games just didn’t know how to do it at the time and the concept art of a musclebound Marcus Fenix just “looked cool.”

In saying that, it doesn’t mean the franchise will go this route in the future. CliffyB made the analogy to the Batman films – both the good and the bad.

If we get around to ever doing more Gears games, I hope we can continue to drift back more towards a Christopher Nolan type dialogue as opposed to a Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher Batman.

Don’t get excited yet Gears fans, as CliffyB also admitted that this idea is “way down the line.”

If Epic does somber up Gears’ narrative, do you think it will make the franchise better or is it more suited to what it is now?
