Dota 2 Lich Guide – Builds, Items and Strategy

Dota 2 Lich
If you are new to Dota 2, I recommend you start with Lich. The hero is a ranged support that uses his frost magic to slow down enemies while boosting his team’s survivability by increasing their armor.

With his Sacrifice, he can win lanes by denying EXP, making him out level the opponents. His ultimate Chain Frost, makes him a force to be reckoned with in team fights.

Lore
In life, the frost-mage Ethreain (not yet a Lich) had used the threat of destructive ice to enslave entire kingdoms. His subjects, aided by a few desperate magicians, eventually grew bold enough to ambush him. Armed with enough charmed rope to bind him forever, they tied the frost mage to adamant weights and dropped him in a pool known chiefly for being bottomless.

It wasn’t. He only fell for a year or so before an outcrop snagged him. There he rested, dead but undecaying, until the geomancer Anhil thought to verify the legend of the supposedly bottomless Black Pool. Anhil’s plumbline snarled with the ropes that bound the drowned magician, and up he hauled an unexpected prize.

Thinking that by rendering the dead undead, he could question the Lich about the properties of the pool, he removed the bindings and commenced a simple rite of resurrection.

Even the descendants of Ethreain’s enemies were long forgotten by time, so there were none to warn Anhil against imprudence. But he learned the error of his judgment almost immediately, as Lich threw off the shackles and consumed him.

Lich Skill Build

Level 1 – Sacrifice
Level 2 – Frost Blast
Level 3 – Sacrifice
Level 4 – Frost Blast
Level 5 – Frost Blast
Level 6 – Chain Frost
Level 7 – Frost Blast
Level 8 – Frost Armor
Level 9 – Frost Armor
Level 10 – Frost Armor
Level 11 – Chain Frost
Level 12 – Frost Armor
Level 13 – Stats
Level 14 – Stats
Level 15 – Stats
Level 16 – Chain Frost

This is the optimal Skill Build which will give you the lane superiority and a really strong maxed nuke, followed by a strong armor. Exceptions: Take Frost Blast at level 1 when attempting a First blood, and take Ice Armor at level 1 when attempting level 1 Roshan.

Level 2 Sacrifice is enough to deny a creep in every wave and maxing Ice Armor after Frost Blast will give you and your team the most survivability.

Take ultimate whenever possible.  Taking extra levels of stats is better than extra levels of Sacrifice because it will give your hero a bigger mana pool and more survivability.

Recommended Items

Starting: Courier, 3xBranch, Salve, Tango, Clarity

Lich can and should afford the courier for his team. these items will ensure he has a nice start and the clarity is there to help you spam Frost Blast

Core: Flying Courier, Observer Wards, TPscroll, Boots of Speed, Magic Wand and Bracer

These are the items basic items that Lich needs in the early stages of the game. Always carry a teleport scroll to help your allies when they get ganked. Sometimes they will give you free kills. Magic Wand and Bracer will make Lich a little bit stronger.

Situational: Mekanism, Drum of Endurance, Force Staff, Ghost Scepter, Phase Boots

Lich players will generally want to get one or two of these items, they are cheap to make and don’t require much farm. Mekanism in particular fits Lich perfectly since he can and should always have enough mana to use it, and the heal and regen are really nice.

Luxury: Aghanim Scepter, Scythe of Vyse, Boots of Travel
Get these if the game is lasting well over 40 minutes and you are a rich Lich.

Dota 2 Lich Strategy

Start near your base tower to Sacrifice a creep right away and then use Sacrifice whenever cooldown is over. Be agressive in the lane and spam your Frost Blast on enemy heroes.

Gang enemies whenever you have Chain Frost ready. It can be one of the most devastating ultimates in the game, and can easily turn a teamfight in your favor when used properly.

Each time it hits; it deals very high magic damage and bounces to another random enemy, unless there are no targets nearby. Use it to deal damage quickly to clustered Heroes.

Keep wards up on the map so that you and yourself benefit from having better map control

Ice armor is very effective and costs so little mana to use, be sure to keep it up on yourself and your allies for the extra survivability boost!

Have fun playing Lich and stay Frosty!
