It seems that more and more smoke has been coming from the “Next Xbox” front lately. Now, MCV is stirring the pot once more with news that the next iteration of the Xbox won’t be featuring a physical disc drive.
The site has supposedly learned that Microsoft has been telling partners that the next Xbox will not include a disc drive. This report, as described by MCV’s source, has been issued under what they describe as they “strictest NDA” they have ever encountered.
NDA is, of course, the abbreviation for non-disclosure agreement – a contract that’s quite the norm in the industry when it comes to early knowledge of games, hardware and any of the sort.
While the console might not include a disc drive, it will offer compatibility with some kind of interchangeable memory card storage; though it’s not known if this will a standard SD card or something proprietary to Microsoft. Given past history with the company, I’d wager a guess that it’s the latter.
What makes this rumor even more exciting is that supposedly, the console has been confirmed to be out next year. Now the issue with this is when will Microsoft announce it if the rumor is true? This year’s E3 perhaps?
Keep in mind that this is still very much a rumor and should be taken as such…although it is fun to speculate, no?
