Peter Molyneux, famed game designer of games such as: FablePopulous, Black and White, will be leaving Lionhead Studios and Microsoft as a whole to start his own studio.

In a statement to Kotaku, Molyneux states, “It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey.”

For those worried about Fable: The Journey’s quality dipping without Molyneux, there’s no need for it as he will see to the completion of the game and will be involved as as a creative consultant.

Molyneux had this to say regarding his departure:

I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created,” Molyneux said, “from Black & White toFable to our pioneering work with Milo and Katefor the Kinect platform. However, I felt the time was right to pursue a new independent venture. I’d like to thank the team at Lionhead, as well as our partners at Microsoft Studios for their support, dedication and incredible work over the years.”

Peter’s new studio will be called 22 Cans – however, aside from the name, it’s not known yet what their projects are or if he’s planning on going the multi-platform route.

Expect more news on this as it develops…but in the meantime, best of luck to you, Peter!
