The good news for those who want to cling to any silver-lining is that the press release states that 90% of the workforce being laid off will come from departments not related to game development. What’s more, the company specifically states that the World of Warcraft team won’t be involved in this whatsoever.
Furthermore, a former Blizzard employee familiar with the inner trappings of the organizational issue has told Vox Games that the layoffs are predominantly from the customer service sector.
What happened was the advent of automated customer services (IE: reclaiming compromised user accounts) and with WoW’s subscribers getting slimmer year-on-year, Blizzard found that their customer service staff far exceeded demand.
It’s also worth noting that Blizzard has mentioned that these layoffs won’t affect the release dates of any of their upcoming games. Whew! So, I guess Diablo III is well on-track for its release this year, then?
We offer our deepest sympathies for those laid off and wish them all the best.
