The struggle of man for improvement cannot be stopped. When i see games like Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Crysis etc, my brain temporarily is forced to believe that this is the ultimate. We can’t have any better visuals than this. But with the rapid growth and advancements in the field of technology, there is always something better waiting for us.
Being a powerful platform for the developers, Unreal Engine 3 has given us some fabulous titles since its launch and still some classy games like Arkham City are yet to be released. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has revealed the concept of their upcoming Unreal Engine. He told IGN:
I spend about 60 percent of my time every day doing research work that’s aimed at our next generation engine and the next generation of consoles. This is technology that won’t see the light of day until probably around 2014, but focusing on that horizon enables me to do some really cool things that just aren’t practical today, but soon will .
He also believes that with rapid advancement in technology, we can reach the next milestone in gaming in almost ten years.
I really see two major milestones coming up for games in the very long-term future. Number one is achieving movie quality graphics and movie quality pixels on the screen, which mean no flicker in the visuals, no popping artifacts, no bulky character outlines on the screen at all. I see that actually occurring over the next ten years. I expect I’ll be actively programming at the time we’ve achieved full movie-quality graphics because that’s really just a matter of brute force computing power and clever algorithm. We know exactly how to do that. We just haven’t been able to do it because we don’t have enough terra flops or petta flops of computer power to make it so. I expect over the next ten years we’ll a real revolution in that area as we make up this missing gap between where we are today and everything movies are doing.
So there will be no difference left between games and movies. To be honest, i find some animations and affects in modern day games better than movies. What will the next step look like? My wildest of imaginations have a pretty faint picture about it. 2014 might also be the year when we will see next generation of consoles which can actually make full use of this technology. We will have to wait and see till this supposedly revolutionized product is completed.
