I was shocked to hear that Halo 4 creative director Ryan Payton has left 343 Industries and will no longer be the part of the project. I mean why would someone leave something big and exciting like Halo 4? Payton has his reasons and he believes that he does not have “enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through”.
After a few years, there came a point where I wasn’t creatively excited about the project anymore. The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavour through.
He had great time at Microsoft and says that Halo 4 will be a great game. The decision can also be attributed to his interest in developer Jake Kazdal working on indie RTS Skulls of the Shogun.
I think time is the most valuable thing we have and I’ve decided that I’m not going to waste one more day working on something that doesn’t speak to my values
So Halo 4 isn’t something he wanted to make as he concluded:
Some people say I’m crazy, but I want to make a game that one billion people play at once, and it’s something that hits them harder than a great book or film
