Metal Gear Franchise Has Sold Over 51.3 Million Units Worldwide

While there is not news about the upcoming Metal Gear Survive but, Konami has revealed the lifetime sales figures for the Metal Gear franchise.

Metal Gear franchise is one the long-running franchises in the game industry and a Metal Gear Solid movie is also in the works. While there is not news about the upcoming Metal Gear Survive but, Konami has revealed the lifetime sales figures for the Metal Gear franchise since its inception.

According to Konami, the Metal Gear franchise has sold over 51.3 million copies since its inception in 1987. These figures include the sales till March 31, 2017. This is a significant jump in sales as back in March 2016, the franchise had sold 49.6 million units.

Doing the math, it seems that the latest entry in the franchise, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, sold almost 1,7 million units for the past on year but, this is just speculation.

After the announcement of Metal Gear Survive, Konami has not revealed much about the game and the studio has been quite silent on the topic of Metal Gear Survive. However, Konami has assured that Metal Gear Survive is on track for 2017 launch.

In the latest Konami Financial Results presentation material, Metal Gear Survive is listed as a 2017 title. According to the listing, the game is set to release by the end of 2017 which means that Konami might reveal the release date for the game during this year’s E3.

However, series creator, Hideo Kojima, is not happy with the direction in which Metal Gear franchise is going with the upcoming Metal Gear Survive. According to Kojima, the game has nothing in common with the franchise.

It has nothing to do [with me]. I know absolutely nothing about it. That’s because it’s totally unrelated to me, right? Um, how should I put this? Well, for me, Metal [Gear] is espionage with political fiction. Right? So, because of that, there’s no reason that zombies would show up. This is how I see it, you know?

Metal Gear Survive is a co-op survival action game and it will be available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in 2017.
