Tekken 7 Took Years to Develop Its Rendering Camera System
This year’s highly anticipated release of Tekken 7 is, in more ways than one, a refreshing take on the iconic fighting franchise. Rather than simply pushing another installment, Bandai Namco took it upon itself to address accessibility concerns and build gameplay features from the ground up.
In a recent interview, series director Katsuhiro Harada and lead game designer Michael Murray discussed various aspects that make Tekken 7 special. The rendering camera system, for one, was one of the most difficult features to develop for the game. It allows a player to choose which side to fight on, and while that sounds simple enough, it took the development team several years to accomplish. According to Bandai Namco, Tekken 7 is the first fighting game to feature such a “groundbreaking” rendering camera system.
Harada also noted that over ninety percent of the Tekken fan-base comprises casual players. Unlike other fighting games, Tekken is incredibly difficult to get into. Hence, the development team made it a priority to make the new installment slightly easier for newcomers.
The same notion was shared by Aris “Aris” Bakhtanians in February. The veteran player and caster explained that Tekken is one of the few remaining fighting brands in existence that still carries a legacy of deep gameplay mechanics. In fact, anyone hoping to become even remotely good at Tekken 7 will need to invest at least two years to the game.
Elsewhere in the interview, the developers mentioned that Shaheen, the new playable character in the game, was created with the help of Saudi Arabians who were studying at the time in Japan.
