10 Most Expensive Games

Grand Theft Auto V

Well, this one had to be on the list. One of the most expensive video games ever made with a development budget of $137 million. That’s not all; Grand Theft Auto V had a marketing budget of $128 million. The total budget for this game stands at $265 million.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

After the success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Activision became comfortable with spending a buttload of money on this franchise. The publisher spent $50 million on the game’s development. Meanwhile, the creators took $200 million out of the bank for the game’s marketing. This brings the total to $250 million for Modern Warfare 2.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

It is May the 4th today so how can a Star Wars game not be on our list? Star Wars: The Old Republic needed $200 million to develop and it is safe to say BioWare made that money back. It is one of the most popular Star Wars games.  The marketing budget is unknown, we know companies are wary of sharing such stats.

Destiny

Bungie’s sci-fi shooter is one of the most expensive games made by Activision. The development cost is almost $140 million and its player count is at 25 million registered players. The marketing budget is also touching $140 million while Activision has spent a total of $500 million toward a 10-year plan for this franchise.

Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption is another classic from Rockstar games and its development budget is $80-100 million. The good thing is that it sold over 10 million copies in no time which allowed Take-Two and Rockstar to make their money back. The developer is currently working on a sequel to the title.

Deadpool

With an overall budget of $100 million, Deadpool will go down in history as one of the most expensive failures. The game looked dated and cheap even with a hefty budget and a large team working on it. However, the game has a niche fan base who would like a sequel.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt RED created a masterpiece for our generation. It is one of the best RPG’s released in the past decade but it sure wasn’t cheap to develop. CD RED spent $46 million on the game and an additional $35 million on its marketing. The game has sold well and received numerous awards.

However, not many people know how much Konami spent on this final chapter of the Metal Gear saga. According to the numbers, Konami spent $80 million on Metal Gear Solid V. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a massive commercial success.

LA Noire

Another Take-Two game from Team Bondi; the development cost exceeds $50 million but it is one of the rare Take-Two games that wasn’t a major commercial hit. Still, a better part of the community wants to see another game but the development studio is no more.

Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs’ overall budget is over $68 million but the game failed to make any sort of a mark. It was a commercial failure and it also managed to took down its sequel, Watch Dogs 2. The negetive reception of the original game affected the sequel.
