Punk Proves His Alpha Status, Dominates Street Fighter V at DreamHack Austin

To say that Victor “Punk” Woodley had an impressive run at DreamHack Austin would be an understatement. The eighteen-year-old not only secured his second Street Fighter V premier event in a row, but also crushed some of the best players in the business.

After being knocked into the losers bracket by Chris “CJ Truth” Jayson, Punk became an unstoppable force that decimated a long list of names in unprecedented fashion. Holding just Karin and his signature smirk, Punk whitewashed most that stood in his way to glory.

Here are some of his victims:

  • (2-1) Jarrett “Magneto1080p” Austin
  • (2-0) Anas “Vagabond” Khan
  • (2-0) Zhuojun “Xiao Hai” Zeng
  • (2-0) Daigo “Beast” Umehara
  • (2-0) Ricki Ortiz
  • (3-0) Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis
  • (3-1) Justin Wong
  • (3-0) Arman “Phenom” Hanjani
  • (3-0) Kun “Xian” Ho
  • (6-2) Tatsuya “Haitani” Haitani (twice)

However, the monumental run did take its toll on the young Street Fighter V player. In the grand finals against Tatsuya “Haitani” Haitani, Punk almost handed over the trophy by choking under pressure. While his opponent did take advantage of the opening, he also slipped up to allow Punk to finish the game with just a pixel of health remaining.

Punk was already being hailed as one of the best Street Fighter V players in the world. His victory at DreamHack Austin over the weekend ensures that title for the time being. We will likely see him show up in upcoming premier events to remind everyone why he is the “Alpha” of the game.

Last week, a new batch of Capcom Pro Tour DLC was announced. Two of the most storied characters in the series are getting formal attires, with Ryu sporting a traditional Japanese festival outfit and Ken donning a flashy tuxedo. In addition, this year’s Capcom Pro Tour DLC will introduce another Capcom Pro Tour-themed stage. Not to forget, last year’s winner Du “NuckleDu” Dang will be collaborating with the developer on his Champion’s Choice Costume.

If Punk manages to win Capcom Pro Tour this year, he will be in line to design his own costume next year for Karin.
