Microsoft Patent Reveals Foldable Surface Phone Turned Into Tablet
Microsoft patents thousands of inventions that do not make into final products, however, rumors surfaced in 2016 about the Surface Phone and a recently Microsoft patent reveals foldable phone which turns into a tablet.
The patent details a flexible device with a hinge and display that will transform a phone into a tablet. The foldable phone model was discovered by MSPowerUser and the model reveals the idea or concept of Microsoft’s future mobile device. The large foldable phone can be turned into a tablet or more into a tent mode much like Lenovo’s range of Yoga tablets. See the image below to get a better picture of the idea. Microsoft filed this patent first back in October 2014. However, it should be noted that company may or may not have abandoned the idea. But, what we know from words of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella referring towards smartphones, that company is working on a device that will be “the ultimate mobile device”.
The inventor listed on this patent is Kabir Siddiqui, who has successfully patented Microsoft’s Surface Kickstand and SurfaceCamera angle, previously. Plus rumors surfaced last year that Microsoft will come up with a Surface Phone in 2017 and this new patent could be the clue to next upcoming phone. Because Microsoft regularly avoids the traditional form factor of phones for it Surface Phone. So, the latest patent could be the key patent for Microsoft to do a comeback in smartphones and show its potential.
It is unclear at the moment if the device would see the original production or will remain a concept or prototype for display in 2017. However, the patent reveal clears one thing that Microsoft is aiming for a device that can cover the need of other devices. A smartphone, which can act as a tablet, or even be more yet it stands out than Samsung’s Note series. In nutshell, an all-in-one device for various purposes.
