The Engine Behind Valve’s New IP
Valve hasn’t released a new game in a very long time and now we have word that it is working on a new IP. Yes, the company that gave us Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, Counter-Strike, Half-Life, and more is coming up with a new IP.
Lord Gabe recently held an AMA session on Reddit and discussed a number of things including Steam, VR, Half-Life, and a brand new IP. Well, they don’t really discuss it beyond confirming its existence and its Source. According to GabeN, Valve’s new IP is running on Source 2, which is the primary development environment for Valve games.
We are continuing to use Source 2 as our primary game development environment. Aside from moving Dota 2 to the engine recently, we are are using it as the foundation of some unannounced products.
GabeN went on to say that
We would like to have everyone working on games here at Valve to eventually be using the same engine. We also intend to continue to make the Source 2 engine work available to the broad developer community as we go, and to make it available free of charge.
What this game is when Valve will reveal it is anyone’s guess. Hopefully, it won’t take over a decade for Valve to produce something for us. As for those who wish to know about Half-Life 3, there is nothing to share but GabeN did say that they are open to revisiting the franchise once again.
His comments sort confirm that any Half-Life projects we knew to be in development are canceled.
Do you think Valve would ever release anything Half-Life?
