Ed Boon has finally announced an Injustice 2 release date, and it’s a bit of a break from NetherRealm tradition. Where most of the studio’s games have come out in April in the past (including the previous Injustice game), the new Injustice game will be coming out in mid-May.

Ever since Injustice 2 was announced at last year’s E3, the game has been the subject of a large amount of curiosity as various mechanics, characters, and arenas were revealed. Now, with the Injustice 2 release date public knowledge as posted on Ed Boon’s own Twitter page.

Injustice 2 will likely be the direct sequel to the original Injustice: Gods Among Us game, which pitted a number of superheroes and villains of the DC Universe as they traveled to an alternate universe where Superman became evil and ended up ruling the world with an iron fist after killing the Joker.

The game already allowed several dozen heroes as characters, and with Injustice 2 now coming out, we’ll be seeing even more heroes both old and new. We’ve seen a number of these already in various promotional videos, such as Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd, Atrocitus, the Blue Beetle, and more, along with returning favorites like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

Now that there’s finally an Injustice 2 release date, NetherRealm may be showing off even more gameplay in a similar manner to what they did before the release of Mortal Kombat X, where they showed off a variety of characters and their movesets. While Injustice 2 probably won’t have the same sort of style-select that Mortal Kombat X did, we’ll very likely be getting more videos that show off characters and their movesets.

Something else that might get shown off at some point in the coming months is the game’s story mode. NetherRealm recently took a step up from their normally mediocre stories in Mortal Kombat to make an actual mode in Mortal Kombat X, so whatever Injustice 2 has in store will hopefully be the same quality.
