AMD vs Nvidia

As this year is about to come to an end I think it would be best to remember the great AMD vs Nvidia war that took place for the GPU market. Nvidia was the first to release the GTX 1080 and the 1070 GPUs. These were high-end GPUs for enthusiast gamers that wanted to play VR as well. In response to this AMD then released the RX 480 and affordable GPU for the masses which also had VR support.

AMD vs Nvidia

Nvidia has reigned supreme when it comes to the high-end GPUs. Ever since the release of the GTX 1080 and 1070. RX 480 was the budget king for about a month until the GTX 1060 came out and provided a competition. Although the GTX 1060 was a bit expensive as compared to the RX 480 it was still a great option for the team green fans. Soon after the release of the RX 480, AMD released the RX 470 as well as the RX 460 for mainstream and e-sports gamers.

GTX 1060 specs:

  • CUDA Cores: 1280
  • Core Clock: 1506MHz
  • Boost Clock: 1708Hz
  • VRAM: 6GB GDDR5
  • TFLOP: 3.8
  • Memory Clock: 8Gbps
  • Memory Bus Width: 192-bit
  • Memory Bandwidth (GB/s): 192
  • TDP: 120W
  • Transistors: 4.4b
  • Manufacturing process: FinFET 16nm
  • Power connector: 1x 6-pin PCIe

While these mid to entry level GPUs were great options at the time but AMD had a very small window to sell these GPUs as Nvidia soon released the GTX 1050 as well as the GTX 1050Ti. Branding the card similarly to the legendary GTX 750Ti proved to be a great marketing strategy for Nvidia.

The high-end GPUs from Nvidia were so successful that they were sold out as soon as they hit the market and that was the trend weeks later as well. The GTX 1080 was, in fact, the companies most sold GPU ever. It will be hard to beat this record. AMD vs Nvidia war has gone throughout the year and there is still more to come. We saw the performance of the Titan XP that is the most powerful single GPU on the market as of right now but we also saw the Vega demo and it was very promising indeed.

The AMD vs Nvidia war has proven to be great for the consumers. Competition is always great for consumers as we have seen in this case as well. Lower prices of the AMD products forced Nvidia to introduced mid-range products and the entry level products from Nvidia forced AMD to cut prices. This is what has been going on all year when it comes to AMD vs Nvidia. What do you think about GPUs in 2016?
