Nintendo Had Been Working On Something Like Minecraft According To Shigeru Miyamoto
Recently while talking to Glixel, Shigeru Miyamoto, the man behind the famous Mario franchise revealed that around 20 years ago, Nintendo was working on something similar to Minecraft and he would have liked it had that project ever been completed.
While in US promoting the upcoming launch of Super Mario Run on iOS, Shigeru sat down to talk with Glixel and talked about his interest in Mojang’s blocky sandbox game and how he sort of regrets never making a game similar to Minecraft despite having projects which were similar at the core.
Shigeru Miyamoto said
I do like Minecraft, but really more from the perspective of the fact that I really feel like that’s something we should have made. We had actually done a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days and we had some designs that were very similar. It’s really impressive to me to see how they’ve been able to take that idea and turn it into a product.
Despite being owned by Microsoft, Mojang has released Minecraft on Wii U and the game has been such a success that Nintendo even worked with Mojang to release some exclusive Super Mario content for Wii U edition of the game.
Why exactly did those Nintendo projects never saw the light of the day is unclear since the company does promote a family friendly, creative and playful design with most of its game.
It could also be due to the pretty much nonexistent market for sandbox games in those days especially when Minecraft allows players to build pretty much everything, some of it not suited for the eyes of kids.
Whether Nintendo will once again delve into something similar to Minecraft and manage to nail that formula, where countless others have failed, or not remains to be seen. However, Shigeru’s latest creation Super Mari Run is definitely on track to being a huge hit.
