Sony: Playstation VR Sales Are Going According to Plan
According to a recent report by Sony, Playstation VR sales have been a huge success, allowing the company to make a very tidy profit off of their direct competitor to other VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. The Playstation VR came out a few weeks ago on October 13.
In the second quarter of 2016, Sony has reported a 31% increase in revenue year over year, likely as more people get ready for Playstation’s newest offerings, the Playstation 4 Slim and the Playstation 4 Pro (the latter of which will release later in November.)
The good Playstation VR sales aren’t really surprising; the headset had practically flown off the shelves prior to its release whenever it was available on Amazon and other gamer retailer websites, and the headset served as a good alternative to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, both of which cost at least two hundred dollars more than the Playstation VR.
All three of the different VR headsets do have a wide variety of games available, though, and are sure to provide at least several hours of entertainment each, or provide a night of good fun if you want to test it out with your friends, not to mention all of the other VR games that may come out for the Playstation VR in the future.
According to the analysis firm IHS Markit, the Playstation VR has so far sold 1.14 million units, which is actually fairly good for the VR headset, especially when you put it next to the Playstation 4 sales numbers, which are currently around 40 million.
Even though there are still 39 million Playstation 4 owners out there that don’t have a Playstation VR, the fact that Playstation VR sales have managed to touch even a small fraction of that number is promising, as long as Sony can keep up the pace with new games being released for it.
