Valve has announced that the company will offer its certain Virtual Reality Technology to third party companies for free. Valve will specifically license its Steam VR Tracking free of royalty to the third party hardware companies.

According to Valve, the Steam VR Tracking, will allow hardware developer to build precise position and orientation sensing into devices of all kinds.

Valve said VR Tracking uses the same technology as the HTC Vive, and could be used in variety of devices such as VR peripherals and other input devices.

Valve will not only give the technology for free, but will also offer training, but only for the “first wave” of of those who will license it. Those who will license the technology later, will get online tutorials for the technology. According to HTC’s Raymond Pao:

It’s critical to the future of the Virtual Reality Ecosystem to open up the tracking technology to support the growth of a healthy portfolio of products that work together with HTC Vive. This is an amazing way to complement the HTC Vive and spur further innovation in VR. We will also offer training in the Asia region in the coming months to support the adoption and licensing of Steam VR Tracking. We’re thrilled to see the world of tracked devices expanding and growing.

Valve’s Alan Yates added that making the technology available to more partner s is important for the evolution of Virtual Reality.

Making this tracking technology available to more partners is an extremely important step in the evolution of virtual reality and 3D tracking. We are very confident that doing so will result in new and innovative experiences for all VR customers.

Speaking of the VR, Sony is bringing back the demo discs with PlayStation VR, which have not been used since all demos became digital downloads for the last generation of consoles.
