No Man’s Sky Starter Guide to help you get started with the procedurally generated space exploration game.

However, before we begin, do note that there are 18 quintillion planets in the game. Due to this, it is virtually impossible to cover each and everything. But we will make sure to continue providing interesting updates.

Another thing to note is that the primary goal of the game is to reach the center of the universe. And since each player begins at a different planet, it is possible to take weeks/months before you come across another online player.

Our No Man’s Sky starter guide details everything you need to know about getting started with No Man’s Sky.

No Man’s Sky – The Atlas

The Atlas is the place where a player uploads all his/her discoveries. Moreover, it also keeps track of a player’s progression. Whenever a player uploads a new discovery, he/she is rewarded with in-game currency.

The Atlas is accessed from Beacons found on each planet. One thing to note here is that if a player dies before uploading the discoveries made, all information is lost!

Lastly, Sony has also confirmed that Playstation Plus is not required to access or upload on The Atlas – allowing you to share your discoveries with your friends and other online players.

No Man’s Sky – The Primary Objective

As mentioned earlier, the primary objective of the game is to reach the center of the universe. Given the scale of the game, however, it is possible to continue exploring instead of working towards the primary objective.

Once reached the center, new items and resources will be unlocked and the game’s creator Sean Murray calls it a new beginning for players who wish to continue exploring.

Whether players wish to continue planets, help out other players, or participate in trading – the options are virtually endless.

No Man’s Sky – Discovering New Stuff

There are nigh-infinite planets in No Man’s Sky with unique flora and fauna. The game makes sure that no entities are similar or even perform a similar function. These creatures and environments continue to become more hostile as players move towards the center of the universe.

If a player wishes, he/she can put the primary objective aside and continue to explore new systems and planets. Each time a new discovery is made, the discoverer will be able to name it and share it with the rest of the online community.

Before getting on a planet, players can scan it from a distance and get an idea of what to expect from it. Once landed, however, they can scan the area for different points of interest including The Atlas beacons, resources, and other things.

Lastly, there are planets which may have toxic or radioactive environments. In order to access and explore these types of planets, players will be required to upgrade their ships and suits. Moreover, planets near the sun will have hot environments and vice versa.

No Man’s Sky Hostile Alien Factions

In addition to planetary creatures, there are alien races that can be interacted with in a number of ways. While exploring new planets, you may come across these alien factions and learn a thing or two about them.

Depending upon your actions, you may be rewarded with new tech or be treated as hostile explorers. If you are deemed hostile, you will get a Wanted Level which will determine how much trouble you are causing in a particular area.

To deal with troublemakers, there are defenses which are outlined below!

Sentinels
These self-replicating machines are called when an explorer is caught over-mining or tries to harm local wildlife.

Interstellar Peacekeepers
These guys work like police and are called upon if an explorer is causing harm to other spacecraft or tries to raid a trading convoy.

Military
If you somehow manage to get rid of Interstellar Peacekeepers or police, Military ships will be called in which are equipped with the most powerful weaponry in the universe and can neutralize any threat with ease.

No Man’s Sky Combat

There is both land and aerial combat in the game, but you will not experience it in a large capacity. While exploring, you will come across two factions fighting each other and will have the option of either jumping in or staying out of it.

If you, however, come across another online player fighting a space pirate, it is a good idea to help the player out to get help in return later down the road.

General Tips and Strategies

  • Planets near sun are too hot and vice versa – find the ones in middle.
  • The in-game currency is earned eliminating pirates, trade, and by uploading discoveries.
  • Prices you get from a trade depends upon the system you are in. Wait until you get the best!
  • When discovering a planet for the first time, upload the details to get credits and units.
  • Wildlife on some planets are lethal. So always be on your toes.
  • Wildlife on planets change with night/day cycle – adding more to exploration.
  • Ships can be bought from stations, but only one can be used at a time.
  • You lose everything not uploaded upon death including all discoveries.
  • Always be wary of pirates and help other online players fight them.
  • Hyperdrive Fuel is an important resource so make sure to salvage it for long star jumps.
  • Continue to upgrade your suit to discover a wide range of planets.
  • Search shipwrecks and other destroyed areas – you may come across useful tech.
