Pokemon GO

You cannot immediately start battling in Pokemon Go after capturing your first Pokemon. In order to battle in Pokemon GO, your trainer needs to be at least Level 5, after which you will be able to enter Pokemon Go Gyms and start fighting.

Pokemon Go battles can only occur in a gym. Players who have played earlier Pokemon games understand this concept fairly well, but if this is your first time with a Pokemon game, you are in for some learning.

Once you hit Level 5, you will be able to enter Training Gyms. These are the places where the battles occur and you buff your Pokemon up. Our Pokemon Gyms guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

Our Pokemon Gyms Guide details everything you need to know about battling in the game, how to win more battles, which team to join, and how to become a gym leader.

Pokemon Go – Joining A Team

The first thing that you will be asked to do after entering a gym will be to join a team. There are three to join – Team Valor, Team Mystic, and Team Instinct.

There are no advantages/disadvantages of joining one team over the other. You can go with anything you like! You can also check your mini-map to see what color gyms are there to dictate your decision.

Pokemon Go Gym Battles – Battling It Out

After joining a team, you will be able to enter a gym and participate in battles. Even if you do not do anything, you will gain bonuses for being a gym member.

If you enter a gym corresponding to your team color, you will be able to defend it and participate in Pokemon training. Coming to defending the gym, each one can have x3 defenders.

If you decide to become one of the defenders, you will participate in battles and build prestige which will improve your gym’s defenses by a large margin. However, you must choose a Pokemon before engaging in battles!

After you open up your Pokedex, you will be provided with a complete list of all Pokemon that you have captured. On this screen, you will also be provided with a couple of methods to make your Pokemon stronger.

The first option is Power Up which requires Stardust. This item is acquired by catching Pokemon and increases a Pokemon’s base stats. You should be able to farm Stardust fairly easy.

The second option is Evolve which requires Candy. Once again, this item is acquired by capturing Pokemon. Furthermore, you can also trade a duplicate Pokemon with Professor Willow in order to acquire more Candy. However, one important thing to note here is that each Pokemon requires a different flavor of Candy.

When it comes to trading, always remember to trade in Pokemon with low CPs. Once you have evolved your Pokemon enough, start participating in battles and defend your gym.

Pokemon Go Pokemon Go Gym Battles – Battling It Out… Smart!

Before heading into a battle, it is a good idea to check CPs of other Pokemon. As a general rule of thumb, you need to have more CP than the average of the defenders in order to win.

Aside from CP, Pokemon-Type is another important thing that you need to keep an eye on. There are multiple Pokemon-Type and one can have a distinct advantage over the other. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with these types to win more.

Once these things are out of the way and you are ready to battle, make sure to know your attacks! A normal attack is executed by simply tapping the screen which will fill in a blue bar. Once the blue bar is filled, you will be able to execute a special attack.

Some other things that you need to note here is that you must defeat all defenders in order to take over a gym. Moreover, if a Pokemon dies, you can quickly swap out another one in its place or leave the battle entirely.

Pokemon Go Gym Battles – How To Win Gym Battles

In addition to the tips mentioned earlier, there are some other things that can do in order to increase your winning chances. One of the best ways of winning Pokemon Go battles is to play the game with a teammate.

If you and another teammate enter a gym at the same time, both of you will fight the opponent Pokemon at the same time. This is specifically useful if you are having trouble with a fight and do not want to run out of all your Pokemon in a single battle.

Another important thing that you need to do is to dodge attacks. This little technique gets ignored most of the time, but can easily create the different between winning and losing a battle.

While you are in a battle, you simply need to swipe left/right in order to evade incoming attacks successfully and win more battles!

One of the best gym battle tips that I can give you is to pay close attention to Pokemon Types. CP does matter when it comes to defending Pokemon Go gyms, you need to pay close attention to Pokemon Types of other Pokemon. As mentioned earlier, Fire-Type burns Grass-Type, Grass-Type defeats Water-Type, and Water-Type get rid of Fire-Type.

We have compiled a separate guide on Understanding Pokemon Types and which ones are the best ones. Make sure to check them out by heading over to the link!

Pokemon Go – How To Become A Gym Leader

As hinted earlier, in order to become a gym leader, you need to deplete a gym’s Prestige to zero by defeating all available defenders and take it over.

Each Pokemon Go gym will have different number of trainers whom you will have to battle in order to deplete a gym’s prestige and claim it for yourself! After you see that a gym has turned grey, you need to claim it first in order to become the Gym Leader.

Once you have successfully become a Gym Leader, you will need to make sure that your Pokemon has the highest CP among other trainers or you will no longer be the leader.

As I have already mentioned above, you either need to Power Up or Evolve your Pokemon in order to increase its CP.

Pokemon Go Gym Tips – Farming PokeCoins from Pokemon Go Gyms

If you head over to Store, you will see a shield and a number. This essentially shows you how in how many gyms you have Pokemon in. For each gym in which you have Pokemon, you get x500 StarDust and 10 PokeCoins. This boost caps at x10 gyms, but if you have x10 gyms; it essentially means x5000 StarDust and x100 PokeCoins.

For every 21 hours, you can get the boost, but in order to get this you must defend gyms. The tips provided above can help on how to defend Pokemon Go gyms, so make sure to check them out and reap the rewards… PokeCoins.
