Overwatch Winston Guide: Counters, Ability Tips, Strategy, Strengths and Weaknesses
Winston is another one of Overwatch’s Tanks, he is carrying a Tesla Cannon as his main weapon. The cannon comes with a slight auto aim feature while it shoots electricity beams at the enemy.
Winston is an intelligent, genetically engineered ape. Raised at the Horizon Lunar Colony on the moon by Dr. Harold Winston, who was killed when all the other apes went nuts and declared the colony as their own.
After Harold’s passing, Winston returned to earth to join Overwatch, leaving the Horizon Lunar Colony behind for good.
Overwatch Winston Guide
Like I mentioned above, he uses a very powerful weapon that is capable of shooting electricity beams at the enemy. The slight auto aim feature makes it easier for Winston to target opponents, who’ll find it difficult to escape when face to face with Winston.
Unlike other tanks in Overwatch, Winston has much better mobility thanks to his booster pack that allows him to jump around the map. Not only that, Winston uses Barrier Projector globes to protect his allies from enemy fire.
His Ultimate turns him into a furious beast with massive HP pool and attack damage. Perfect for breaking through defenses and taking on a group of enemies.
Winston Strengths and Weaknesses
His auto aim ability allows him to cause significant damage at close range to multiple enemies. He can protect his teammates and can exasperate enemy backline heroes.
His ultimate, Primal Rage, not only disrupts the enemy team, causes massive damage but also adds survivability to Winston.
His booster pack also plays a role in his overall survival mechanics as well as adding to his mobility. Winston is viable for both attack and defense.
However, he has low burst damage and is not very affecting at mid range and does little to no damage at long range. Understanding how to play with Winston is easy but mastering his abilities takes time as it requires exceptional positioning, timing and more.
Winston Abilities and Ability Tips
This section of the guide provides an overview of all the abilities and ultimate ability at Winston’s disposal and how to effectively use these abilities in order to have more successful games.
Winston’s weapon fires a short-range electric barrage for as long as he holds down the trigger.
Assisted by his energy pack, Winston lunges through the air, dealing significant damage and staggering nearby enemies when he lands.
Winston’s shield projector extends a bubble-shaped field that absorbs damage until it’s destroyed. Allies protected by the shield can return fire from within it.
Winston embraces his animal nature, significantly boosting his health and making him very difficult to kill, strengthening his melee attack, and allowing him to use his Jump Pack ability more frequently. While raging, Winston can only make melee and Jump Pack attacks.
The Tesla Cannon 100 ammo but it run out pretty quickly. What’s great about the cannon is that players can target more than one enemy at a time and the lighting can bounce onto multiple enemies, perfect for crowd control.
Winston is the most mobile tank in the game. His ability to jump around makes his invulnerable many of Overwatch’s characters and give him great escape mechanics.
However, cooldown time 6 seconds to use this ability wisely. Create barriers to protect your allies, especially, from Torbjorn’s turrets.
Use the shield to hold choke points to allow your team push forward. Keep in mind that some type of attacks are immune to the shield (more on that below).
Winston Counters and Match-Ups
Winston is strong againts Hanzo and Widowmaker due to his exceptional mobility as a tank. Winton’s shield is a great counter for AOE damage output of Junkrat, who don’t stand a chance in one on one encounters with Winston.
Winston is also particularly affected againts Symmetra and Zenyatta. Both of them are comfortable keeping their distance from tanks but Winston is able to close the gap and take them down. Keep in mind that Winston’s Shield does not protect him againts some channeled attacks such as Winston’s Tesla Cannon, Symmetra’s Photon Projector beam.
Reinhardt’s Fire Strike is also a threat to his shield, meanwhile, melee attacks aren’t blocked off as well. Mei’s generous health pool and not having to reload her weapon makes life difficult for Winston. The shield can block off her attacks if you manage to get it up in time.
Reaper’s Wrath ability allows him to get close to enemies and once he does, he can rip through any tank. Against Reaper, all you can do is don’t allow him to get too close and keep attacking.
How to Play Winston: Tips and Strategies
Winston is the only tank apart from Reinhardt that can truly protect his team from damage. Use your shield during while standing next to your teammates, this would not only block enemy attacks but allows your team to stay behind cover and keep attacking without taking any damage.
Do note that apart from protecting your team, your main focus should be on harassing and disrupting the enemy team. Use your mobility and exceptional close range damage to do just that. The ultimate ability is a great way to confuse, damage and harass the enemy team. Use it to allow your team an upper hand during tough situations.
Winston is one of the only characters in the game that can truly deal with the Widowmaker. Get close to her and do your best to keep her at bay. If you fail to do that, Widowmaker will indeed make a lot of widows.
