Overwatch Widowmaker Guide: Counters, Ability Tips, Strategy, Strengths and Weaknesses
Widowmaker is a sniper and one of the most over-powered hero in the game – provided that she is in right hands. When played some decently, she can carry the entire game.
She cannot only dish out huge amount of damage from a long range using rapid shots – which can be charged up for even more damage potential – but also automatic fire at medium to close range.
Aside from her signature sniper rifle, she also has a grappling hook which she can use to always roam around the map, find new vantage points, or to simply avoid getting noticed by opponent heroes.
Overwatch Widowmaker Guide
While playing as Widowmaker, you are best going against sluggish targets with big bodies – so that you do not miss your shots. When placed against heroes who can quickly close in the gap and deal massive damage at close range such as Reaper and Tracer, she struggles.
However, in order to deal with these heroes, she has Venom Mine that can prevent opponent heroes from flanking her. Lastly, her ultimate ability provides the entire team composition with the vision of enemy team for 15 seconds which is huge and should be capitalized on.
Widowmaker Strengths and Weaknesses
Personally, I am of the view that Widowmaker is one of the most over-powered heroes in the game. Not only she is extremely potent at medium to long range, she also possesses the highest damage per shot in the entire game.
On top of that, she has insanely high mobility and an extremely potent ultimate ability that provides your entire team composition with the vision of the entire opponent team for a total of 15 seconds. This vision also shows enemies through the walls and rooms as well!
Widowmaker Abilities and Ability Tips
This section of the guide provides an overview of all the abilities and ultimate ability at Widowmaker’s disposal and how to effectively use these abilities in order to have more successful games.
Widowmaker’s versatile sniper rifle is ideal for scope-aimed shots at distant targets. Should targets close to medium range, the rifle can also be fired in fully-automatic mode.
Widowmaker launches a grappling hook towards the location she’s aiming at – when the hook connects with a scalable surface, she’s quickly drawn towards it, allowing her to expand her view of the battlefield and evade or flank targets.
Widowmaker adheres a swiftly-arming venom mine to nearly any surface. When a target wanders within range of the mine’s motion trigger, it explodes, delivering poison gas to any enemies in the vicinity.
Widowmaker’s recon visor allows her to see the heat signatures of her targets through walls and objects for a moderate amount of time. This enhanced vision is shared with her allies.
Widow’s Kiss in Assault Mode should only be used at close-range and against fast-paced targets. Try to stick to Sniper Mode for medium-long engagements. The reason for this is that her weapon loses effective damage when used in Assault Mode.
Unless a target is already on low HP or escaping, you should always let your weapon charge before firing. Moreover, you need to learn to prioritize your targets – never go for tanks if there are other high priority targets on the field.
Grappling Hook is one of your most valuable assets in the game. Not only it will allow you to continue moving, but also to find better sniping positions. As a good Widowmaker player, you always need to be on the move. The ability’s cooldown automatically resets if it does not connect, allowing you to retry once more.
Venom Mines are not only decent for preventing flanks, but also to prevent opponent heroes from capturing objectives. You will get an audio clue as soon as an opponent hero passes by a Venom Mine. There is no point in placing them out on the open like Bouncing Betty in Call of Duty games. Place them at choke points and hide them well.
Lastly, coming to her ultimate ability, you should always use it instantly, but make sure that you communicate with your team. Moreover, you need to make sure that you have your Venom Mines placed and Sniper Mode ready to rack up some eliminations.
Widowmaker Counters and Match-Ups
Bastion is one of the heroes on whom Widowmaker can focus Bastion all day long using her ranged attacks and charge. Since Bastion has no long range abilities, he struggles when going against Widowmaker. Having only 150 HP and needing to be out in the open in order to deal any significant damage, there is no way Zenyatta can trouble any decent Widowmaker player.
Mei, on the other hand, can stop Widow from advancing using Ice Wall and deal a whole lot of damage using icicles – so this match-up is in the favor of Mei. Another counter is Genji who can easily get to Widowmaker faster than anyone else in the game and can one-shot Widowmaker using reflect in some scenarios.
Like Genji, Winston is another extremely hard counter to Widowmaker. All you need to do is to get in close, throw down the shield, and boom! On the other hand, while playing as Widowmaker, you should always try and stay near your team and ask them to help you to get him killed.
Both Reinhardt and Lucio cannot 1-on-1 Widowmaker, but Lucio can use his speed to avoid getting hit and lure Widow in a position to enable his team to finish her off. Reinhardt’s shield can protect his entire team long enough for someone to get in close range to Widowmaker and eliminate her.
Speaking of sniper versus sniper match-up, not only Hanzo’s arrows are slow and require charge to reach Widowmaker, Widowmaker’s shots have increased range and deal more damage and do not require charge. Lastly, as for Tracer and Reaper, they are the heroes who need to close in the gap, get close to Widowmaker somehow in order to be able to dish out some considerable damage.
But then again, it all depends upon scenario and the type of map you are playing on. In all honesty, the match-up can go anywhere.
How to Play Widowmaker: Tips and Strategies
Probably the best way to play Widowmaker is to play around her strengths which is staying at a distance and picking opponent heroes from there. Do not try to be a quickscoper with her, she does not perform well at close-range and will die most of the times.
She is best played on the defensive side of the map – away from all the action. If not, then you should at least try to stay behind the team and eliminate opponents trying to engage your teammates.
