Overwatch Reinhardt Guide: Counters, Ability Tips, Strategy, Strengths and Weaknesses

Overwatch (27)

Reinhardt is an insanely powerful tank in the game with a massive shield, rocket thrusters, and a huge hammer at his disposal! He is not only able to protect the entire team composition with his massive shield, he can also charge forward – thanks to Rocket Thrusters – pin an opponent hero against the wall and secure an elimination most of the times.

His hammer cannot only target multiple enemies at the same time, but also has very high damage output and the longest range of any melee weapon in the game.

For more help on Overwatch, read out our Hero Counters and Match-Ups Guide, Overwatch Crashes and Workarounds Guide, and Soldier: 76 In-Depth Hero Guide.

Overwatch Reinhardt Guide

His ultimate ability deals damage and also stuns the opponent heroes for a short period of time. However, do note that he lacks a lot when it comes to mobility and cannot do much against heroes who have the ability to hover in the air.

Indeed, he can toss Fire Strike projectiles at them using his hammer, but even those do not a whole lot of damage. He has a total HP pool of 500 which increases to 2000 with his shield active.

Reinhardt Strengths and Weaknesses

This hero is probably one of the best tank heroes present in Overwatch. He is not only able to protect his entire team composition from high damage output dealt by the opponent team, but also deal insane amount of melee damage.

Combining these things with the fact that Reinhardt is an exceedingly decent team fight initiator and has the potential of wiping the entire enemy team out, Reinhardt can be played both in offensive and defensive roles.

Coming to his weaknesses, this hero not only lacks when it comes to mobility, but has negligible damage outside the melee range. You need to have strong team synergy in order to perfectly play Reinhardt since he cannot do anything while protecting the team with Barrier Field.

Reinhardt Abilities and Ability Tips

This section of the guide provides an overview of all the abilities and ultimate ability at Reinhardt’s disposal and how to effectively use these abilities in order to have more successful games.

Rocket Hammer
Reinhardt’s Rocket Hammer is an exemplary melee weapon, able to deal punishing damage in a wide arc with every swing.

Shield
Reinhardt projects a broad, forward-facing energy shield, which can absorb substantial damage before it is destroyed. Though Reinhardt can protect himself and his companions behind the shield, he cannot attack while sustaining it.

Charge
Reinhardt charges forth in a straight line, grabbing hold of enemies in his path. If he collides with a wall, foes he’s carrying suffer extreme damage.

Fire Strike
By whipping his Rocket Hammer forward, Reinhardt slings a flaming projectile which pierces and damages any enemies it touches.

Earthshatter
Reinhardt forcefully slams his rocket hammer into the ground, knocking down and damaging all enemies in front of him.

When it comes to Rocket Hammer, do note that you can only swing it once per second. However, its reach and damage potential will make up for it if it connects. Barrier Field is probably the best ability at Reinhardt’s disposal.

However, you need to learn to time it right and keep its charging time in mind. While using this ability, you will not be able to fire and will move much slower, but you will protect your entire team.

You can use charge to advance towards objectives, snare opponent heroes, and outright eliminate them most of the time. Since Reinhardt cannot do much against heroes in the air, Fire Strike works wonders here. Thanks to its speed, you can also use it to interrupt opponent heroes’ ultimate abilities – provided that you time it perfectly.

As already mentioned, Reinhardt’s ultimate ability stuns all opponent heroes caught in it for a few seconds. This will give your team with ample time to secure some kills and push towards objectives.

Reinhardt Counters and Match-Ups

When going against Soldier: 76, do note that Soldier: 76 can deal pretty decent amount of damage, but Reinhardt has about 2000 HP pool with Barrier which Soldier: 76 simply cannot deplete on his own. However, McCree needs to land his Flashbang over Reinhardt shield to eliminate him with relative ease.

Coming to Widowmaker, although she deals a whole lot of damage, Reinhardt’s shield can protect his entire team long enough for someone to get in close range to Widowmaker and eliminate her.

Similar is the case with D.Va because his shield is not only capable of blocking her ultimate ability, but also her Defense Matrix which is almost useless against Reinhardt.

Lastly, coming to Symmetra and Zenyatta, do note that both of them can give trouble to Reinhardt using Symmetra’s ball and Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord.

How to Play Reinhardt: Tips and Strategy

Do note that although you have high damage potential, your basic job is to protect your team and soak up most of the damage dealt to your team. You need to constantly be in touch with your team to discuss things like when to throw shield, when to push, when to retreat, etc.

Provided that your entire team stays behind your shield, they will be able to do huge amount of damage to the opponent team without breaking a sweat. Furthermore, since you cannot do much on your own except for getting a kill or assist may be, you should always try to be with your team. Enemy heroes who have hovering ability can do serious damage to you without you doing anything in return.

Although your ultimate ability is pretty useful for getting an elimination or two for your team, you should try to save it for perfect moments and try to capitalize on it. Moreover, do not forget to share your own Overwatch Reinhardt tips and strategies with us!
