Overwatch D.Va Guide: Counters, Ability Tips, Strategy, Strengths and Weaknesses
Overwatch’s D.Va is an ex Starcraft player who is now fighting to protect her home from the omnics. She is the only character that can reach the same height as Pharah using her big mech. This is no ordinary mech, it features Fusion Cannons that can deal significant damage.
The best part about the cannon is that it doesn’t need reloading so spam fire while having strong mobility thanks to the mech which also allows her to seek health packs and to reposition herself on the map. Mech Boosters have really low cooldown.
Overwatch D.Va Guide
D.Va’s Defense Matrix ability can be used to great effect as it can block enemy fire and projectiles. That’s not all, this same ability is able to block some of the Ultimate abilities of other characters in Overwatch.
Mixing this with spamming of Fusion Cannons can make life difficult for Pharah (if she’s at close range), Reaper, Mei and others.
One of the best parts of D.Va is that she can destory her mech with a massive explosion that could result in multiple kills. The disadvantage to this is once the mech is down, she hops out of it and is on her own.
D.Va Strengths and Weaknesses
D.Va has excelent close range damage and Defense Matrix not only protects the mech but her allies as well. This means that in certain situations D.Va can act is a support character as well. The Self Destruct ability is extremely dangerous.
Great mobility of D.Va is complimented by 500-health of the mech and 150 health of her human form. D.Va has low damage at medium range and little to no damage at long range which makes her vunrlable to long range characters like Soldier 76 and Widowmaker.
However, mobility allows her to get close to the enemy and since she doesn’t have to reload her cannon, it can be tricky facing D.Va. One of her main disadvantages though is the size of her mech which means easy to hit headshot hitbox.
D.Va Abilities and Ability Tips
D.Va’s mech is equipped with twin short-range rotating cannons. They lay down continuous, high-damage fire without needing to reload, but slow D.Va’s movement while they’re active.
D.Va’s mech launches into the air, her momentum carrying her forward. She can turn and change directions or barrel through her enemies, knocking them back.
D.Va can activate this forward-facing targeting array to shoot incoming projectiles out of the air.
D.Va ejects from her mech and sets its reactor to explode, dealing massive damage to nearby opponents.
While outside of her mech, D.Va can continue the fight with a mid-range automatic blaster.
If her armored battle suit is destroyed, D.Va can call down a fresh mech and return to the fray.
The Fusion Cannon works best at close range so make sure you aren’t standing at a distance. The cannon should be used in bursts as it slows down D.Va’s movements and limits her mobility to some extent. Also, at long range the accuracy is affected.
Boosters, meanwhile, are great to take your mobility up a notch. Use them wisely to escape dangerous situations or reach certain points on the map quickly.
The cooldown for boosters is only 5 seconds which sometimes may feel unbalanced as it gives her advantage to some extent. Blizzard should consider increasing the cooldown time but until it does, use Boosters as much as you want for a slight edge in battle.
The most affective ability of D.Va is Defense Matrix which protects her from enemy fire, even Ultimates, it is best to use this while standing close to your allies it will protect them as well. You don’t want your teammates to die, leaving you at the mercy of enemies once Defense Matrix wears-off.
D.Va Counters and Match-Ups
Each character in Overwatch has a counter and not one has any significant advantage in battle as there is always someone to stop your reign of terror. Same is the case with D.Va as her ability to dominate certain characters leaves her vulnarable to others.
Long range characters like Soldier 76, Pharah, Windowmaker can give her a tough time and if you are yet to get a grip on D.Va, long range characters can dominate you.
However, in my experience, she is no doubt capable of getting multiple close range kills before someone takes her down. Her advantage of not having to reload her cannon means those who do reload and are close range are no match for D.Va.
Rest in Peace the likes of Reaper and Mei.
How to Play D.Va: Tips and Strategies
D.Va is a tank but can be played as an offensive character. With 500-health for mech and not having to reload, she can cause significant damage. Use this to your advantage and spot close range characters, use your mobility and boosters to navigate the map and blast your enemies with Fusion Cannon.
But how to deal with threats when the mech is gone? Once she is out of the Mech, she uses a very effective pistol that is in no way under powered. Still, it is advised that you go for headshots which may be difficult to nail but gives the best chance of survival.
Survival is key when you are out of the mech because surviving for a certain period of time will allow you to call a new mech. When playing as D.Va, your main goal is to harass and disrupt your enemies. Fly next to them with your versatile Boosters and low-cooldown, use Defense Matrix to protect yourself.
