Stellaris Errors, UI, Black Screen, Crashes, Settings, Stutter, Connection and Fixes

How to fix Stellaris errors, crashes, bugs, UI scaling, graphics settings, stuttering black screen and other related issues.

Stellaris is yet another treat for the real time strategy lovers. This time, Paradox wants the players to manage their empire in space, which means a vast variety of possibilities. The appeal of the game is quite evident from the fact that Stellaris has become the fastest selling game for Paradox Interactive on day one.

The game is doing fine performance wise, but there are some issues that need fixing. So while Paradox find a permanent solution to these problems you might have been facing, you can refer to our troubleshooting guide for possible fixes and workarounds.

Stellaris Errors, Crashes, Bugs and Fixes

#1 Stellaris – UI scaling for High DPI Screens
It can be annoying if you have a high DPI screen but the game cannot scale its UI accordingly. Well, the bad news is that Stellaris is suffering from this issue. The good news however, is that you can fix it by tweaking the configuration file. You can find your Settings.txt file in C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris.

Open it using a notepad and adjust the gui_scale value according to your liking. For instance, at 2560×1440, 1.400000 seems to work fine. You can experiment a bit to get better results.

#2 Stellaris – Performance Improvement for Low End PCs (High Performance Mode)
If you have got a low end PC and you want to improve your performance to a playable level, you can make use of console commands to do so? Not sure what to do? Well, here is a guide that will get you started.

You should keep in mind that these commands won’t affect achievements and they will reset to default once you restart the game. So yes, it’s a hassle but if you want to play it on your old hag, that’s the only way for the time being.

#3 Stellaris – Cannot Connect To MP, Wrong Version
This error will pop up due to content conflict. If you are facing the issue, host/client should disable the Creatures of Void DLC and it should work fine. Just make sure that sure firewall or any other security tool isn’t blocking Stellaris.

#4 Stellaris – Performance Issues on Laptop
if you are not getting optimum performance, chances are that the game is being run by the integrated gpu than the dedicated GPU. You can adjust the settings through your GPU control panel (Nvidia/AMD). Also, make sure that your machine is plugged in while you play the game.

#5 Stellaris Black Screen Fix
If you are getting a black screen with sounds in the background then you should try this workaround. Go to C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris and delete the settings.txt file. This will basically reset your settings and you will be able to see the interface. You can also try running the game in the windowed mode if deleting settings.txt file doesn’t help.

#6 Stellaris – .dll Related Crash Fixes
If your game is being crashed and you are getting some “.dll” related crash message, you should try installing the execuatbales found in the redist folder of the game. Restart your system after that and it should resolve the issue.

#7 Stellaris – Stuck at 30% Loading/Crash
If your game gets stuck at 30% loading or crashes after that, you should verify your game files first. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, you should try running Steam and the game as admin. Also, if you have firewall enabled or any other security tool, disable them temporarily to see if they are interfering with the game. You can add the appropriate exceptions then to make it work.

#8 Stellaris Stutter Fix
Paradox has already rolled out a hotfix and they are actively looking into other issues to fix them with future patches. In the meanwhile, there is a beta you can try to see if the stuttering issue is resolved or not. To do that:

  • Right-click on Stellaris and choose “Properties”.
  • Now, click on “Betas” tab.
  • Select beta_1.0.1. You need to restart Steam if you can’t see it.
  • Download the update and the version should now be 1.0.1

#9 Stellaris – Universal Troubleshooting
If none of the above mentioned fixes have work for you, there is a universal (general) troubleshooting checklist you should try:

  • Disable any user created mods and very game files again.
  • If that doesn’t work, you should do a clean install.
  • If you are having troubles in playing the game in full screen mode, try running it in windowed mode.
  • Run the game and Steam as Administrator.
  • For crashes, run the executables in redist folder of the game.
